Campy Comic Books

Campy Comic Books

I was trying to think of a “cool name” to call this post, and I had to laugh when I stumbled across this pun. I was reminded today of my love of comic books. In finding my identity, it’s been suggested that I go back to my past, before I started mixing who I was with who I was supposed to be, and remember what made me happy. X-Men always drew my attention, and Storm was always my favorite of the characters. I don’t know what it was about her, whether it was the way her cape connected at her wrists, that she controlled the weather, that she knew from an early age what her power was and was revered/respected, or that she could give two craps what other people thought of her powers because she knew she was a freaking awesome beast with absolute control. Or that her eyes just turned white and you knew “ooooooooh, no! Something baaaaaad’s about to happen!”

But that has nothing to do with camp. Who I’m talking about was one of my all-time heroes: PowerMark! You probably never heard of him because hopefully nobody outside of rural southwestern Missouri has, but he went from somehow being an army veteran to leading a group of… kids… from around the world to create Bible stories using holographic imaging to “spread the gospel” because that was somehow some super important mission to this agency. Each comic centered around a child and their story of how they entered the program, the story they chose, and how it somehow affected “the plot” of the “story.” It was for smaller kids, okay! PowerMark had PTSD after being torn down by his enemy who in the final episode was revealed to be none other than…

You think I’m going to give it away? Pssht! Naw, dude! Find the obscure comic series on your own and read it! Hahaha.

Marvel came out with The Avengers a bajillion years ago now, and at first I wasn’t interested in Iron Man. I took one look at his ego and said “no thanks.” Natasha Romanoff who knew several languages, body language, physical combat, etc? She was a superhero to me. Thor? No. Jane? No. Thor’s friends who were there for him even through his pride? I was intrigued. Even Loki I was more intrigued by before his series came out. I was continually surprised by the mistakes Marvel made over and over and over again.

Then I saw Agatha All Along. I was intrigued by Agatha, of course, and how she was going to betray everybody, but I was more intrigued by who the boy was. The boy stole the show. Then I found out more and more about the boy as the show went along. I found out today that not only is the boy one of the only gay superheroes in the Marvel universe, but he also openly battles depression, and that comes into play with his powers. I learned it WHILE WRITING THE DEPRESSION BLOG YESTERDAY. So I might have a new favorite superhero. Sorry Storm and PowerMark. I have to learn more about him.

It doesn’t hurt that the same actor played in a super cute queer show called Heartstopper!
